With the internet came the possibility of working from home, setting up a business in your spare room, or moonlighting as a freelancer. As internet speeds and mobile connectivity improved, so the popularity of the home office increased.
However, working from home is not for everyone, and coworking spaces started to open to address the balance. Here we explore the advantages and disadvantages of coworking versus homeworking.
Advantages of Coworking
Company
One of the biggest plus points is having the company of other people. However much you love your dog/cat/goldfish, it’s just not the same as having other human beings around to bounce ideas off, have a moan with or just discuss the weather.
Professional address
Many people don’t want to put their home address on their website or business cards, so a coworking space lets you add a professional office address, without a huge financial commitment.
Meeting space
If you’re got an important meeting with a potential client, the local coffee shop may not be the best place to impress them. But a swanky office with a shiny meeting room and posh coffee just might be.
Get your home back
If your dining room table is covered in files or if you find it hard to switch off in the evening, then maybe it’s time to separate work and home and get your work-life balance back in check.
Going to work
Just the physical act of getting out of the house and going to work can be a big motivator for many people. Avoid the temptation of daytime TV by packing your briefcase and heading out.
Disadvantages of Coworking
Office hours
Often the first step to starting your own business is working after hours until you establish yourself. But the 5 to 9 isn’t well suited to an office, unless you can find one that lets you come and go as you please.
Finding the Right Space
Coworking in London has really taken off, particularly in the trendier areas to the East of the city (Hoxton, Shoreditch et al) but not all cities have followed suit. A spare desk in a shared office might be an option.
Team Spirit
Depending on the office you choose, there may be a great team of regulars or there may be different people there every time, which means it takes a little longer to get collaboration going.
Commute
You have to get up, get dressed and go to the office. No more working in your pyjamas... but maybe that’s a good thing.
